2010 update
Another year has flown past and 2010 is almost upon us! It’s been an exciting year in public transport, with many initiatives countrywide. To mention some - the launch of Phase 1A of the Joburg Bus Rapid Transit (BRT); construction on the Cape Town and Nelson Mandela Bay Integrated Rapid Transport (IRT) systems; the launch of the Tshwane concept BRT station designs, with construction to start next year; and negotiations with affected public transport operators and other parties. Buffalo City has completed its BRT Operational Plan and is looking at implementation, and Polokwane and Rustenburg are currently both compiling their IRT Operational Plans. The Gautrain infrastructure is looking impressive, and we look forward to riding the rapid rail soon. The challenge for 2010 and beyond will be to implement and operate these systems effectively to provide passengers with the high quality of service they deserve.
We wish you all a peaceful, safe and happy festive season. Rest well - we look forward to the excitement of 2010!

The main modes of public passenger transport in South Africa are minibus-taxis (64% modal split), buses (21%) and rail (15%). The most common complaint amongst passengers is lack of readily accessible public transport.

The donkey cart is a common form of rural transport in many parts of South Africa. Job opportunities have been created by refurbishing the carts to provide tourist rides.
